10 MUST-SEE HISTORICAL FILMS

I love historical movies, not just for being a history teacher, but because they lead me to make a real trip back in time. Obviously, there are bad movies, but they will not be on this list. The criteria for composing the list is that the movie must be based on real people and events. If it is fictional, you should worry about rebuilding the historical setting well. 1- The War of Fire

War of Fire is a 1981 film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. It depicts a period in prehistory and two groups of hominids. Jews who lived in Poland were transferred to ghettos. Horrified at the atrocities committed against the Jews, Schindler decides to use his factory to protect them.

5- The Name of the Rose

The Name of the Rose is a 1986 film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. In the last week of November 1327, in a monastery in medieval Italy, the death, in unusual circumstances, of seven monks in seven days and nights, is the motor responsible for the development of the action. A Franciscan monk is called to solve the mystery and falls into the fabric of a diabolical plot.

6- Gandhi

 

Gandhi is a 1982 film directed by Richard Attenborough. It portrays the life of Mahatma Gandhi, considered the leading leader of India’s struggle for independence, after decades of domination by British imperialism. The film shows striking moments of its struggle and organization, putting into practice the policy of civil disobedience.

7- Ivan the Terrible

Ivan the Terrible is a film directed by Sergei Eisenstein. The first part of the film was produced in 1944, and tells the story of Ivan IV (1530-1584), Archduke of Moscow, who proclaims himself Tsar of Russia and is preparing to retake lost Russian territories. The second part was produced in 1945 but prohibited by Stalin in the USSR until 1958.

8- Spartacus

Spartacus is a 1960 film directed by Stanley Kubrick. It tells the story of Spartacus, a man who was born a slave. Sentenced to death by biting a guard at a mine in Libya, his fate was changed by a lanist (dealer and gladiator trainer), who bought him to become a gladiator.

9- And the Wind Took

… And the Wind Levou is a 1939 film, directed by Victor Fleming. It tells the saga of Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of an Irish immigrant who became a wealthy farmer in the southern United States during the American Civil War. After being widowed, Scarlett goes to the city of Atlanta and ends up serving to the confederates, in the call War of Secession.

10- Ben-Hur

Ben-Hur is a 1959 film directed by William Wyler. In Jerusalem, at the beginning of the first century, lives Judah Ben-Hur, a wealthy Jewish merchant. But with the return of Messala, a friend of youth who is now the head of the Roman legions in the city, a disagreement due to divergent political views makes Messala condemn Ben-Hur to live as a slave.
